Note: (Join us May 26 at Meerkerk or on June 2nd for an Off Island Trip to the Larry Scott Trail in Pt Townsend- scroll down for full event schedule.)
It appears the birds are getting busy for spring. Here's a little something for all of us who feel so virtuous as we feed them!

Here is some feedback from the visit to the Chinook Trails last Saturday:
"What incredible trees along the trail and what incredible woodwork in the buildings. Participating with the Whidbey Walking Group is like have a network of eyes and ears out there constantly looking for the most interesting and beautiful places to enjoy."

Our trip to the Church Moutain Trail, meeting with a member of the Mt Baker Hiking club, and finishing up around the table at Milano's was a great trip!
Here are Leroy's comments:
During our walk on Church Mountain a while back I was reminded of one of m favorite poems: > > THE SPIRE OF MY CHURCH > The spire of my church > Though unseen reaches the stars. > Its foundation rests firm in earth's keep. > Its creed is as big and as broad as the sky > That encircles the earth in its sweep. > It's brethren are those who inhabit the earth > Mankind, the great and the small; > The sons of Muhammad, the Rabbi, the Priest, > This cathedral has room for us all. > God speaks to me in the stir of a leaf, > In the glorious song of a bird > And my pew is a log or a mountain crag > Wherever his voice is heard. > Author unknown
And here are our next planned Saturday outings:
May 26, a walk through the rhodies and woodland trail at Meerkerk June 2, Off Island trip to the Olympic Trail out of Pt Townsend June 9, Deception Pass Trails June 16 Private retreat center/Monastery trails June 23 Whidbey's Premier Garden event - no "hike" scheduled June 30 Picnic and hike at Libby Road county park

My friend, Lynda, has already started her pumpkins. This has inspired me to put in my large, hubbard squashes. So, you ask, what exactly is the difference between a squash and a pumpkin? "The principal differences between pumpkins and squashes are in their skins and stems," according to my gardening bible by J. I. Rodale, "Pumpkins have soft rinds which never become very hard. . .Their stems are hard, woody, and furrowed. True squash have hard rinds and soft, spongey stems. Pumpkin is stronger in flavor and has coarser flesh."
Personally, I believe the big squashes make better pies!
Lynda writes: MY PLANTING REFERENCE SAYS TO MOVE YOUR STARTER PUMPKIN PLANTS AFTER THE LAST FROST HAS PASSED. OF COURSE, THAT'S HARD TO GUESS IN WASHINGTON.SOIL MUST BE WARMED TO AT LEAST 60 DEGREES. GOOD LUCK, GARDENERS. MY SPINACH, LETTUCE AND SWISS CHARD ARE TAKING OFF QUITE WELL. AND MY SNAP PEAS ARE JUST PEEKING OUT OF THE SOIL.
So, let us pick up our thermometers and sally forth! Squashes or pumpkins? Let us know what's up in your garden!
