EVENT UPDATE

On May 10 we will not be visiting the apple blossoms as planned. For one thing this damp, cool season has made the blossoms late, and also our planned walk leader is out of town.

So, we will meet at the Putney Preserve on Lone Lake Road, outside of Langley, for a hike in the forest
at 1 pm.

We will meet at the main parking lot. Feel free to reach me with more questions!

Next week Betty will lead the group up at the Rhodie park, near Coupeville. We will not plan on meeting over the Memorial Day weekend.

WHOO WHOO ON WHISTLE

By the time we reached the far side of Whistle Lake, Richard and I had noted the absence of birdsong. At that moment a winter wren warbled for us. Then, around the bend and up on a flanking hill, we heard a haunting "Whoo . . . whoo" filtering through the forest. Tramp, tramp, skitter, slip, slide and scatter. Within a half hour we were approaching the Anacortes Forest Lands parking lot. Again the soft "Whoo . . . whoo" sounded nearby. "There's an owl!" my observant companion said. "What? Where?" My head swiveled in search. Perched on a low branch in the green gloom of the dense stand of fir was a silent and still gray and white feathered obelisk. The top swiveled, owl eyes! The two saucers looked our way for a moment before turning and disappearing. Once more we were owl-eyed, before the magnificent creature lifted off on huge wings and silently slipped between the trees.
