FIELD WALKER

She knows every inch, from west to east,
north to south.
Even as the seasons
experiment with the colors of the grasses,
even as the crops rotate from one corner to another,
from one year to the next,
and even as the weeds try to distract and disorient her,
she can close her eyes and survey every inch
of these fields -- her fields.

If you want her, you will find her --
There.
Standing between her rows of food,
often a hand resting on the shovel handle.
On the long days, her chin resting on her hand
resting on the shovel.

You’ll find it difficult to disturb
one so focused.
Her lips barely moving as she talks to the land
she knows she is blessed and naive to call her own.

But, her lips do move.

While you wait, imagine.
What it will be like to be of the time
when we will all be grateful
for those who’ve been called
to be our field walkers.
