Well, Mother Nature smiled at us as we took our Off-Island hike at Whistle Lake in the Anacortes Forest Lands on Saturday. With hail in Lynnwood, and thunder promised in Seattle, we started off under gray clouds, and ended with sunshine streaming through the yellow maple leaves above us.
The trail around the lake was well marked, easy to walk two-abreast for the first part, and the last part wound around through the firs and madronas and moss covered logs. After stopping for lunch, and sharing some goodies around the circle (inlcuduing pumpkin nut bread from Sandy) half the group picked up their pace to make it all around the lake in the two hours we had alloted. The rest of us, moving more slowly and enjoying the beauty around us, found ourselves singing as we headed back on the trail under the maples. It started with the Canadian anthem, and then Celeste sang us the Norweigan anthem, and as the sun came out and turned the leaf covered trail to gold, it just happend, and we found ourselves singing America the Beautiful (Ann even knew the second verse!) After piling back into the cars, and heading out, the rain started again.
All in all, a successful hike.
