My friend, Lynda, has already started her pumpkins. This has inspired me to put in my large, hubbard squashes. So, you ask, what exactly is the difference between a squash and a pumpkin? "The principal differences between pumpkins and squashes are in their skins and stems," according to my gardening bible by J. I. Rodale, "Pumpkins have soft rinds which never become very hard. . .Their stems are hard, woody, and furrowed. True squash have hard rinds and soft, spongey stems. Pumpkin is stronger in flavor and has coarser flesh."

Personally, I believe the big squashes make better pies!

Lynda writes: MY PLANTING REFERENCE SAYS TO MOVE YOUR STARTER PUMPKIN PLANTS AFTER THE LAST FROST HAS PASSED. OF COURSE, THAT'S HARD TO GUESS IN WASHINGTON.SOIL MUST BE WARMED TO AT LEAST 60 DEGREES. GOOD LUCK, GARDENERS. MY SPINACH, LETTUCE AND SWISS CHARD ARE TAKING OFF QUITE WELL. AND MY SNAP PEAS ARE JUST PEEKING OUT OF THE SOIL.

So, let us pick up our thermometers and sally forth! Squashes or pumpkins? Let us know what's up in your garden!
