EVENT UPDATE
On May 10 we will not be visiting the apple blossoms as planned. For one thing this damp, cool season has made the blossoms late, and also our planned walk leader is out of town.
So, we will meet at the Putney Preserve on Lone Lake Road, outside of Langley, for a hike in the forest at 1 pm.
We will meet at the main parking lot. Feel free to reach me with more questions!
Next week Betty will lead the group up at the Rhodie park, near Coupeville. We will not plan on meeting over the Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday, April 19 Meet Feet will take some of the Kettles trails to see if any of the wild rhodies are in bloom yet. We will meet at 1 at one of the trailhead entrances along highway 20, just north of Coupeville
On Saturday the 26th Leah is planning to guide us On Saturday May 3rd we will go with Ann up to the wonderful trail around Whistle Lake, in the Anacortest Forest Lands.
And, here is Jan's comment on the day of spring we had recently!
Blue, blue, blue of the sky! Green, green, green of the grass! Daffodils a compact clump of buttery yellow. Forsythia a feathery yellow fan. Spring colors the commute on I-5.
We will have more spring soon (we're sure!) and will go with Diana up to walk in the apple orchard at Houston Road once the blossoms are on the trees, so stay tuned!

FIELD WALKER
She knows every inch, from west to east, north to south. Even as the seasons experiment with the colors of the grasses, even as the crops rotate from one corner to another, from one year to the next, and even as the weeds try to distract and disorient her, she can close her eyes and survey every inch of these fields -- her fields.
If you want her, you will find her -- There. Standing between her rows of food, often a hand resting on the shovel handle. On the long days, her chin resting on her hand resting on the shovel.
You’ll find it difficult to disturb one so focused. Her lips barely moving as she talks to the land she knows she is blessed and naive to call her own.
But, her lips do move.
While you wait, imagine. What it will be like to be of the time when we will all be grateful for those who’ve been called to be our field walkers.

WINTER WALKING ON WHIDBEY (Please scroll down for Event Calendar)
Meet Feet at Ft Casey in December
Thanks to Donna Roddy for sharing the picture, and here is a word picture from Jan: WINTER WINDY WHIDBEY - The first indication there might be turbulence came on the long drop down Mukilteo Speedway to the ferry. I heard the sound of forced air around the window seal in the back seat of the commuter bus. "Can it be windy?" I said in surprise. I looked out into the 6:30 darkness to a churning bush and a swirling fir.
"What would a lightweight person do?" I wondered, as I planted hiking boots to the tarmac, leaning into the icy gale going up the hill from the ferry. The lower road echoed in an ensemble of wind instruments. There was almost a keening whoo through the long limbed bare maples. The firs farther down added a whish whish soughing in a lower register. Up and across the neighbor's lawn, rhododendrons tossed themselves to and fro, with a soft rustling, individual rill as each leaf whirled in the wind. Ah, but add the visual! A silver slice of melon moon silvered the corona of white cumulus that framed a blue velvet star studded night sky. I was silenced in admiration. Almost home now, to an accompaniment of light clacking clapping from the neighbor's single palm tree to survive last winter's storms.

Our hike among the pumpkin fields out at the old Sherman farm on Ebey's prairie was a great time for old timers, new comers, and a couple 4-legged pets that came along!

Well, Mother Nature smiled at us as we took our Off-Island hike at Whistle Lake in the Anacortes Forest Lands on Saturday. With hail in Lynnwood, and thunder promised in Seattle, we started off under gray clouds, and ended with sunshine streaming through the yellow maple leaves above us.
The trail around the lake was well marked, easy to walk two-abreast for the first part, and the last part wound around through the firs and madronas and moss covered logs. After stopping for lunch, and sharing some goodies around the circle (inlcuduing pumpkin nut bread from Sandy) half the group picked up their pace to make it all around the lake in the two hours we had alloted. The rest of us, moving more slowly and enjoying the beauty around us, found ourselves singing as we headed back on the trail under the maples. It started with the Canadian anthem, and then Celeste sang us the Norweigan anthem, and as the sun came out and turned the leaf covered trail to gold, it just happend, and we found ourselves singing America the Beautiful (Ann even knew the second verse!) After piling back into the cars, and heading out, the rain started again.
All in all, a successful hike.

On Saturday, October 20, Meet Feet will take an off-island trip to hike around Whistle Lake, in the Anacortes Forest Lands. These trails were another area saved from development by local activists. They are a great resource for us as they are not far away form the northern tip of Whidbey.
If you'd like to come along as we walk this lovely trail on Saturday, please reach me : woods@whidbeywalks.com

Our day of hiking among the old growth, while Elizabeth* read some of her haiku to us was wonderful, and inspiring. (See picture on main page.) In fact, it inspired one of our members, Jan Hughes, to share the following:
Delightful Davis Moss and old growth directed Haiku happiness Nurse log giving life Nature's cornucopia Moss fir flower fern leaf
And indeed, in spite of the gray skies, there was much beauty and, I believe, happiness shared along the trail among the ferns and salal as we trouped through, stopping only for bits of poetry!
* For more nature inspired haiku, we recommend Elizabeth Davis' book: Wind Whispers Softly
